"Lord, if I should forget you today, please don't forget me!"
(An old Soldier's Prayer)

SUNDAY: Praise / Thanksgiving

PRAISE God for being the God of all creation (Gen. 1:31). THANK God for the variety in His creation, in plants and animals, and especially in people (Ro 12:4-6-). CONFESS to Him your lack of appreciation for so many things He has done and made ( 1 Tim 4:4-5). COMMIT each day to the Lord, showing special appreciation for one thing in nature that you've not noticed in the past. ASK God to help you be more observant as you are involved in your daily activities, praising Him abundantly (Ps. 135).1

MONDAY: for the World

PRAY for the people of Africa. REFLECT on how you perceive them and their troubles. ASK the Lord to show you how He sees them and pray accordingly.

TUESDAY: for Calgary

PRAISE the Lord for our wealth and our entertainments. Thank Him for the organizers and volunteers of the Stampede. Pray for the crowds to be safe, especially the children and the competitors.

WEDNESDAY: for Canada

PRAY for MP and for MLA as they spend the summer months in their home riding, that it would be a time to reconnect, recreate and renew their family relationships. If you have the chance to meet them in the next couple of months we encourage you to tell them that you are supporting them in prayer.2

THURSDAY: for Missions with Jim & Diane McBeth, CBM Angola

Praise God that our first experience hosting a short-term mission went well. One team member did come down with malaria but will be just fine. We recognized the grace of God and are grateful to all of you who prayed.
Please pray that peace would surround the upcoming elections in Angola. Peace makes such a difference for the poor and greatly affects our ministry options.
Many of our partner's churches are in desperately poor areas. This morning I was reading about Elisha and the widow's oil. Please pray that people would recognize the small thing they have and how to make use of it, and that God would multiply it to meet their needs.3

FRIDAY: for the Persecuted Church

Pastor Hamid Shabanov was arrested after police claimed to find an illegal weapon while searching his home in Aliabad on June 20, according to a June 21 report from Forum 18. Pastor Shabanov's family and congregation insist that police planted the gun they claimed to discover. Shabanov's brother sees the arrest as a direct attack on the pastor's Baptist church and an attempt to halt Christian activity in the area. Shabanov's home was among those searched when another local pastor arrested on fabricated charges, Pastor Zaur Balaev, was detained in May 2007. PRAY that the truth of this situation will be made known and that Pastor Shabanov will be released. Pray that Christians in Azerbaijan will be emboldened to follow in their Saviour's footsteps (1 Corinthians 4:9-14, 16).:4

SATURDAY: for the Youth

PRAY for the many young people in our city enjoying the Stampede. ASK the Lord to bless them with disgust for getting drunk or hurting others. Bless them to have a good time without getting high.

Building a Culture of Philanthropy - The Family Office

First Baptist Church of Calgary FoundationThe Family Office and You

A recent study revealed that 85% of us identified ourselves as highly motivated towards philanthropy. The same study revealed that 82% are prepared to give more to their favorite charity, but did not know of the best way to go about maximizing their donation.

Our primary motivation in giving continues to be benevolence as we recognize we share responsibility for the quality of life in our community, but we also desire to be more personally involved in the giving process. We know that there are tax and estate benefits when we are philanthropic and we want to better understand them.

Philanthropic planning means positioning philanthropy within the context of your overall financial plan. It is generally recognized, that before philanthropy will play a meaningful role in the estate and financial plans of families they must first identify available resources that can be allocated to philanthropy.

The professional counsel required to assist a donor properly incorporate philanthropy into their family plans is beyond the financial ability of most charities to be able to provide. In recognition of the importance of professional counsel and in order to offer this valuable service to our donors and supporters, First Baptist Church has engaged The Family Office.

The Family Office, a Multi-Family Office specializing in "Philanthropic Planning", offers an alternative, proven approach to traditional fund raising by positioning philanthropy within the context of your overall financial profile. Most families who are considering philanthropy are typically interested in one of two different analyses.

#1 "Giving while Living" Analysis - This analysis is designed to assist a family in determining if there are available resources to fund their charitable interest. The analysis quantifies the financial impact (if any) on a family if they have a desire of increasing their current annual giving. We typically make our charitable donations by writing a cheque or donating cash. Due to recent favourable tax legislation, the donation of assets, particularly at the time of a sale can decrease the amount of taxes paid, or increase the amount received by charity. The analysis will recommend the most tax efficient method of funding your charitable interests.

#2 "Estate Tax & Philanthropy" Analysis - This analysis is designed to assist a family in determining their current and future estate tax liabilities. The analysis quantifies the estate errosion due to taxes and illustrates the impact on your estate of including a charitable gift in your estate to eliminate the estate taxes - in effect, directing money that would be lost in taxes to First Baptist Church.

If you are interested in learning more about how incorporating philanthropy into your families financial & legacy plans, First Baptist Church would like to offer you a number of options.Complete a confidential Philanthropy Questionnaire and receive a complimentary "Giving while Living" or "Estate Tax & Philanthropy" Analysis (links).

The ideal Philanthropic Program will not decrease your current standard of living nor will it reduce your ultimate estate. Through proper planning your social legacy is created using dollars that were previously allocated to taxes. This allows you to effectively transfer tax dollars to your self-directed social legacy, ultimately benefiting causes you wish to support.

The Legacy that you leave is not just the wealth that your heirs inherit. Your legacy is the part of you that lives on in the heart and minds of others after you are gone. It is the influence you had on your family and loved ones and the impact you had on society.

First Baptist Church thanks you for your previous support and sincerely hopes that you find our approach to "Building a Culture of Philanthropy" in line with your desires as to how you would like to support First Baptist Church. Please do not hesitate to contact Steve Lemp from First Baptist Church @ 509-4139 if you wish further information regarding our partnership with The Family Office.

We continue to be actively involved in supporting Canadian Baptist Ministries in all that we can. We are also grateful for the support and resources that CBM provides us. Gull Lake Baptist Camp is an exciting place for the children, youth and families of Central Alberta. It was developed in 1920 on 12 acres of land with the help of our church. The first manager was Thomas Underwood, a member of our congregation. Since its inception, Gull Lake has had a profound affect of the spiritual formation of many. It has programs all year around for children, youth and adults. This past summer a number of our youth and children attended camps. Pastor Jesse Criss was the speaker during the Jr. Teen 2 camp. Lisa Shierman and Jonathon Shierman were staff coordinators. Some of our teens are currently involved in the on-going three year Leadership Training and Discipleship program. We are pleases to continue to partner with the camp in many ways.

Boys Club has ended for this year. We enjoyed all the different spots, the climbing wall, making robots and wood working, plus learning about God. We have had a really good year and are already looking forward to starting up again in the fall. A big thank you to Murray Pow and Connor Statusi for all their hard work and leadership. See you in Sept.

This page is dedicated to our partners.
These are some of the organizations that we actively participate with. It is our privilege to be a part of the wider body of Christ locally and globally. Acts 1:8 talks about spreading the gospel in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the world. We take this command seriously, attempting to spread the gospel in Calgary, in Alberta, in Canada and to the ends of the world.

We choose to be affiliated with the Baptis Union of Western Canada, who give us much support and resources. It is with pleasure that we work together with them.

Operation Eyesight Universal is another organization that has its roots at our church and that we still support. Dr Ben Gullison and his wife (sister of R.N.Erb, a member of FBC) went to Sompeta, India where they worked in the ArogyaVaram Eye Hospital. In 1962, Dr Gullison addressed the audience at the Men's Dinner at First Baptist Church, who pledge to give $10, the cost of one operation each year, and Operation Eyesight was born. In 1968 Dr. Gullison retired, but the Operation Eyesight Universal continues with Arthur Jenkyns. In 1970, Operation Eyesight begins working in Thailand and East Pakistan (Bangladesh). It also purchased its first mobile eye units to help fight trachoma in Kenya. Operation Eyesight becomes formally known as Operation Eyesight Universal. Since then, operations have expanded to include many other locations in south Asia, as well as parts of Africa and Latin America. Operation Eyesight's work continues to focus on sight restoration, blindness prevention and health/community education.

MOPS is open to all mothers of preschoolers (from birth to kindergarten), regardless of marital status or religion, and provides an opportunity to get together with other moms for friendship and support. We meet twice a month - the 2nd and 4th Friday mornings - from 9:30 to 11:30. Our first meeting of the month we do a craft and the last meeting of the month we have a special speaker or a video about things important to live as a mother and woman. This is such an important time in our lives! And moms need time to renew and connect with other moms. After all, better moms make a better family - and better families make a better world!

The MOPS Story - Mothers of PreSchoolers

Eight women. The number was small, but the need was great. The first MOPS meeting took place in February 1973 in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. For two hours, while their children received care, these mothers talked, laughed, ate, passed a basket for childcare expenses, had a craft demonstration and ended with a short devotional. In this humble beginning, the seeds of the MOPS concept and format were planted. Through friendship, creative outlets, and instruction, the women began to understand that "mothering matters." Today, the same needs for significance are met in much the same way in MOPS groups across the United States and around the world.

From the beginning, women in MOPS were not content to be spectators. Through MOPS, they found an opportunity to discover and cultivate their leadership gifts. As women moved around the country, they took the concept of MOPS with them, and new groups formed.

Growth began as word spread in churches, conventions, and magazine articles that explained this unique new program. Inquiries and requests for information became more frequent, and a handbook was printed. Office space moved from a desk in a family room to a rented office.

In 1981, MOPS established a Board of Directors and incorporated first as MOPS Outreach, and later as MOPS, Inc. As interest mushroomed, leadership training began. One hundred fifty women from five states gathered in 1982 for the first all-day MOPS leadership seminar.

In 1988, MOPS expanded beyond US borders and was renamed MOPS International, Inc. to reflect the international impact of the ministry. As MOPS grew, so did the need for a chartering process, additional resource materials, and a paid staff. The Board hired Elisa Morgan as the first president of the organization in 1989.

MOPS reached out to moms through the MOMSense newsletter (now MOMSense magazine) beginning in 1993. The newsletter joined the existing MOMSense radio program to help MOPS nurture every mother of preschoolers, whether or not she attended a MOPS group. The original MOPS group moms got together again on MOPS International's 25th anniversary.

In 1995, MOPS formed a partnership with Zondervan Publishing House, further expanding its outreach to mothers through books. Also that year, MOPS established Teen MOPS groups for teenage mothers. MOPS became even more available to moms when it went on-line in 1997, and in 2000 when it created the MOPStoMom Connection (now MOPS International Membership) to bring additional resources directly to a mom's home.

MOPS has come a long way over the years, and continues to adapt to meet the various needs of moms today.

Here are some facts on why:

Only 1% of the total water resources on earth are available for human use. While 70% of the world's surface is covered by water, 97.5% of that is salt water. Of the remaining 2.5% that is freshwater, almost 68.7% is frozen in ice caps and glaciers.

More than 1 in 6 people in the world remain without access to safe drinking water.
Over one-third of the world's population has no access to sanitation facilities.
In developing countries, about 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions.
1 out of every 4 deaths under the age of 5 worldwide is due to a water-related disease.

In the next 24 hours, diarrhea caused by unclean water and poor sanitation will claim the lives of 4,000 children" - OXFAM

Community involvement is an important aspect of our lives. Many of our members are actively involved in our community and at various levels of municipal, provincial, and federal Governments. We believe that the mind and heart of Christ must be brought to bear at each level of society.
The focus of all our programs is to meet the needs of individuals and families and to communicate the Good News of Jesus Christ.

This ministry has continued to flourish and now has taken up residence on Centre Street and 11th Avenue as a sister organization.

Summer Day Camp for Elementary and Pre-School Children

Many families with children find the summers long with few options for affordable, well-supervised programs. Our Summer Day Camp programs are designed with people like this in mind. July and August are exciting months at First Baptist for kids.

Two nights each week, community youth are provided with a safe place to hang out, spend time with friends, make friends, play games, listen to music, and interact with Christian leaders about the tough issues of life.

The Mustard Seed Street Ministry is one of the ministries that First Baptist Church supportes. The Mustard Seed grew out of our Burning Bush Coffeehouse ministry, which was a drop-in center for young street people started by a group of young people, who during the summer of 1972, ministered to children in the Victoria Park area, shared God's love with people on the Eighth Avenue mall, and held coffeehouses. During the fall in 1972, the church's old dining hall was renovated, and on January 6, 1973, the "Burning Bush" opened its doors under the leadership of Reverend Bob Ball. In 1983, the Victoria Mustard Seed Street Church joined the Burning Bush. The SEED was a Street Church: a church of street people, for street people and run by ex-street people. They would gather for Sunday services, and take part in the care of the facility, the operation of the coffeehouse activities, discipleship classes, and crisis work. In 1989, they changed to be a ministry instead of a church and choose the name to The Mustard Seed Street Ministry (The SEED). They helped to teach the church congregation how to care for the underprivileged. The SEED began to grow rapidly as individuals and groups from the city and country offered their compassionate service to the ministry. In the next few years, the house at 521 - 13 Avenue SW, and the ministry within it, was stretched beyond its limits. At the same time, they began to create partnerships with other organizations, such the Baptist Union of Western Canada (BUWC) and the North American Baptist Conference (NABC), In November 1991 they finally found a new home and moved out from our premises. See their web page to what and how they are doing today. Although they moved out from our premises, we celebrate the good things that this organization is doing and we continue to support them all we can.

The First Baptist Sanctuary Choir forms the heart of worship arts at First Baptist Church, performing regularly at the 10 am Sunday morning worship service. Membership in this choir requires a strong commitment to service for Christ and His body, the Church. Although choir members do not have to necessarily be expert music readers, they must be able to match pitch and commit themselves to learning their music well. The choir rehearses every Thurs. evening from 7 - 9 pm in the sanctuary. The also prepare extended seasonal presentations for Christmas and Easter. While committed 'regulars' form the core, additional members are invited to join rehearsals leading up to these seasonal events. If you are interested in joining the choir, please contatct Ian Charter, Choir and Music Director.

First Baptist Church, Calgary, first opened its doors in 1888-part of Alberta's rich heritage! Music and the arts have always played a key role in defining the character and vitaliry of the worshiping community at First Baptist Church. The amber-toned stained glass windows imported from Germany were part of the origianl construction of the sanctuary. A three-manual, 42-stop pipe organ was built and installed by the Casavant Freres Company of St. Hyacynthe, Quebec in 1912 and underwent further enhancements in 1965 and 1992. Currently the 900-seat acoustically rich heritage sancturay supports an Adult Sanctuary Choir, two Handbell Choirs, a Children's Choir, and a Contemporary Worship Team.

We Live to Celebrate the Life of God - Celebrate God

Through awareness and response to God's presenceThrough commitment and communion with Jesus ChristThrough oneness and praise in the Holy Spirit

The Bible instructs us to meet together regularly to celebrate the life of God (Hebrews 10:25), praising..."Him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy - to the only God and Saviour be glory, majesty, power, and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forever more! Amen" (Jude 24&25)Celebrations
On Sunday, our 10:00 am celebrations at our Central Campus offer a blended worship experience, sharing, prayer, and the application of God's truth for living our lives. Also, Sunday at 10:30am we have our service in the south end of the City at our Southgate Campus. And at 1:00 pm on Sudays we also have our Spanish Service at our Central Campus.

At all our worship services we enjoy God and each other and we are strengthened and encouraged by both.

Children's Celebrations

We encourage families to worship together and we provide a children's church as part of our regular celebrations. There is a pre-school program for children 3-5 years of age and an elementary program for children grades 1-6. These programs involve music, puppets/drama, and creative teaching styles that allow children to learn and enjoy worship. Nursery care is provided during the morning celebrations.

Spanish Ministry

Living at the heart of a multicultural city, we are pleased to offer a worship service in Spanish each Sunday at 12:30 p.m.. Our Spanish-speaking pastor offers excellent leadership and care.

Music Ministry

Music is an important part of our worship and a meaningful way for people to be involved. Sanctuary Choir: leads regularly at our 10:00 a.m. celebration and at other special celebration services. Handbell Choir: performs at various celebration events in our church and community.Music Makers: our children (grades 3 to 6) learn to play instruments, sing, participate in our worship celebrations, and perform in various musical events. Worship Bands: lead regularly in our 5:45 p.m. celebrations and perform in other events.Men's Chorus: a men's fellowship that practices regularly and enjoys ministering in our church and around our province.

Special Celebrations

Throughout the year special celebration opportunities are provided. These are deeply appreciated and enjoyed by many in our city. These include a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service, Easter Sacred Concerts, and a variety of special choral, musical, and dramatic presentations. These celebration events enrich our life together and provide great opportunities to invite friends, family members, and seekers to come and enjoy.

Tape Ministry

Cassette tapes of the services are available for purchase and for distribution to those unable to attend services.

Hearing Enhancement - Handicapped Access

These are available to assist those who are challenged in these particular ways so they can celebrate with us.

"TRUE CELEBRATION
- quickens the conscience by the holiness of God;
- feeds the mind with the truth of God;
- ignites the imagination by the beauty of God;
- opens the heart to the love of God;
- devotes the will to the purpose of God." (William Temple)
