Daytime ESL Classes

Various ESL levels for nine weeks each

  • From 9:15 am to 2:30 pm
  • Monday to Thursday except holidays
  • $30 registration fee included/non-refundable

                          July 19 - September 16 (summer term)

                          October 12 - December 9, 2010 (fall term)

Evening Classes

The following classes are free and no registration is needed:

Wednesdays: 6.30 - 8.00 PMConversation groups
Thursdays: 7.00 - 9.00 PMA variety of classes, e.g.
 Canadian life and culture
Idioms and Pronunciation
Special guests
Job preparation
Bible Studies

Childcare is provided for both evenings

Sunday Classes

Bible Classes at 11:30am following the Worship Service at 10:00am

Both Wednesday conversation (6:30pm - 8:00pm) and Thursday class (7:00pm - 9:00pm) are free drop-in classes. No registration is required and no fee is charged. 

Daytime ESL class is a 9-week full-time program which runs from 9:15am to 2:30pm Monday through Thursday.

Two or three levels of classes offered, depending on number of students registered.. Every applicant is required to take an assessment test. This test is usually scheduled one week before a new term starts. After you register with us, we will arrange a time for your test.

CILC Director

Alec worked in various aspects of engineering and management for over 25 years, including a time in Bolivia, where he experienced the challenges of living in a new country and learning a second language. In addition to this, he developed learning material and taught for 8 years at the college level in several job-related subjects including Communications. Most of his students were New Canadians from a variety of homelands.

Alec has been an active member of First Baptist Church for over 30 years, serving in numerous capacities ranging from church Moderator to Handyman, and often leads adult studies.

Alec and Carol retired from regular work in 2005, and now spend their time in several volunteer projects, outdoor recreation, and travel. They have a grown son and daughter, and a fine new grandson.

Daytime Coordinator / Teacher

Nada Ramsden (B.A., Cert. Adult Learning, CTEFL) comes to us with a variety of work experiences including geophysics, resourcing, pastoral work, and teaching of all ages, from two years to adults. She became interested in ESL work while hosting Japanese students and has worked with children in Japan. In the afternoons you can find her doing administrative work in the CILC staff room. She enjoys working in the international community of CILC.

Teachers

Calgary International Learning Centre is committed to ensuring top-quality language instruction by employing qualified and experienced classroom teachers.

 

Doreen Spurgeon (B.Ed, RNA) Doreen has worked in the education and health fields. She brings that diverse experience into her classrooms. Doreen has taught in a variety of alternative schools and learning centres. Doreen has been part of CILC since its beginning. Prior to this she gave direction to our evening children's program.

Peggy Abbott has been involved in various areas of education for many years. Her first career was as a psychiatric nurse, and community mental health nurse working in Regina and then in rural Saskatchewan. Since moving to Calgary 10 years ago, she has been involved in women's ministries, Alpha at her church and the Calgary Immigrant Women's Association. Peggy returned to school in 2008 and received her TESL certificate at Mount Royal College. She has been a volunteer English teacher since that time. She is married with 3 adult children and 2 cats. She has several hobbies; snowshoeing, golf, hiking, camping and reading. She also teaches beginner knitting. 

 

Lynne Dale, A.R.C.T., B.A. (hon.), M.A.  Lynne got her first degree from the University of Toronto when only sixteen - it is an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto and is in pianoforte.  She has taught piano as a hobby for about 25 years.  Her M.A. was in Regional Planning and Resource Development from the University of Waterloo.  As a planner, her employers included Alberta Municipal Affairs; the Cities of Edmonton, Calgary, and Ottawa; the town of Black Diamond; several local developers and engineering companies.  As an ESL teacher, she has taught in Morocco and Calgary, and loves teaching!  Her hobbies include bicycling, hiking, golfing (at least TRYING to golf), walking, and both playing and teaching piano!

The support of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds has been important to the ESL Classes and learning opportunities offered by CILC. As you get to know these wonderful, caring people, you will improve your conversational and networking skills, as well as make new friendships.
